AFA members are invited to a private tour of Les Lalanne: From the Collection of Bannon and Barnabas McHenry generously hosted by Christie’s on Wednesday, December 10, at their New York location at 20 Rockefeller Plaza in NYC.
Members gathered for coffee at 2pm, followed by our private tour at Christie’s. This visit comes just ahead of the collection’s inclusion in Christie’s Design sale on December 11.
The collection includes a group of works with a fascinating connection to New York history. Barnabas McHenry was instrumental in introducing Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne to the New York Zoological Society (now the Wildlife Conservation Society), for which Claude produced a re-design of two Zoo gates that was ultimately executed only in maquette form. FX Lalanne also produced a series of animal maquettes for this project, which are believed to be early examples of the larger series of Lalanne sculptures beloved today.
