AFA members are invited to a special tour of The Met’s American Wing, led by Thayer Tolles, Marica F. Vilcek Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture.

This behind-the-scenes tour will focus on the paintings and sculpture of the Gilded Age while drawing connections to the AFA’s upcoming exhibition, Monuments and Myths: The America of Sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French. Members will learn about French’s role as a Met trustee and the evolving process behind the presentation of the museum’s collections. The tour will also include a walk-through of the exhibition, New York Art Worlds, 1870-1890, co-curated by Thayer Tolles and Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge. This exhibition investigates the vibrant cosmopolitan and modern art world that emerged in New York during the post-Civil War years.
