Memory Gates is an immersive installation by contemporary Syrian Armenian artist Kevork Mourad, currently based in New York. Composed of monotype prints applied to large-scale fabric panels that are drawn, cut, and suspended, the work creates a series of arches, doorways, and passageways that visitors can move through. Blending architectural references from across the ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern worlds, particularly Mourad’s memories of Aleppo, Syria, Memory Gates invites visitors to engage directly with elements that reflect a multiplicity of cultural histories and reminds of the realities of architectural impermanence.  Memory Gates invites participants to experience arches and doorways as thresholds between past, present, and future, and as metaphors for memory, migration, and cultural continuity. Mourad draws on elements of Roman, Islamic, and Babylonian architecture, when monumental walls once shaped cities and civilizations.
