Dustin Yellin (American, b. 1975) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work transcends traditional silos of medium and subject. His unique multidisciplinary practice employs various modes of making—including sculpture, painting, collage, installation, film, and technology—that braid together past, present, and future through multiple realms. Yellin is best known for his intricate yet monumental sculptures. These captivating compositions are constructed through the meticulous layering of painting and collage between dozens of panes of glass. Once combined, the strata transform—like theatrical scenography—into artistic ecosystems all their own. Yellin describes these as “modern-day pictographic allegories” designed to help us parse the entangled, uneasy relationship between nature, technology, and the human condition.  

Yellin’s talent for worldbuilding is both deeply historical and entirely futuristic; he draws equal inspiration from the fantastical paintings of Hieronymus Bosch (Dutch, c. 1450 – 1516) as the theoretical cosmology of astrophysicist Janna Levin. His work belies his polymathic mind, referencing subjects as wide-ranging as artificial intelligence, cellular biology, Renaissance cabinets of curiosity, Indigenous pottery, and extraterrestrial geology. Packing references to these and many more fascinating subjects in every inch of his work across two- and three-dimensions, Yellin’s art presents viewers with portals into new worlds and pathways to fresh perspectives.
