In celebration of the AFA’s upcoming tour of The Studio Museum in Harlem’s collection to six museums across the US, we are organizing a series of programs highlighting the work of leading African American artists and curators. In this inaugural event, AFA members will enjoy a special tour and reception at the CUE Art Foundation with artist Peter Williams and curator Larry Ossei-Mensah.

The exhibition titled With So Little To Be Sure Of features a series of oil paintings, drawings, and a mixed-media installation that confront viewers with the systemic violence that African Americans have endured. With a vivid palette and comic-style rendering, Williams paints a frenetic narrative that is at once enticing and grotesque.

Peter Williams holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He lived in Detroit for seventeen years, where he taught at Wayne State University. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Larry Ossei-Mensah is a Ghanaian-American curator and cultural critic who uses contemporary art and culture as a vehicle to redefine how we see ourselves and the world around us. Recently, he was the 2017 Critic-in Residence at ART OMI and currently serves as a mentor in the New Museum’s incubator program NEW INC.
