ABOUT JEFFREY GIBSON

Jeffrey Gibson (American, b. 1972) has evolved an aesthetic that examines our armatures of meaning, from language and text to pattern and music, and how they act as interlocutors with the world around us. Gibson is celebrated for his work in painting, installation, video, and performance, which combine vibrant color, complex pattern, and both sourced and original text, with found objects and sound, to create layered compositions that reference global histories and interrogate the distinctions between craft and fine art. His multidimensional practice also emphasizes collaboration and forges new platforms for Indigenous voices and makers.
Gibson received international acclaim for his 2024 exhibition, the space in which to place me, which debuted at the 60th Venice Biennale, where, as a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, he was the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States with a solo exhibition. The exhibition will make its U.S. debut at The Broad Museum in Los Angeles on May 10, 2025. In 2024, Gibson was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2025 Genesis Facade Commission. He will create four figurative sculptures for the Fifth Avenue Facade niches that will debut on September 12, 2025.
Gibson lives and works near the Hudson Valley region of New York State. He holds a MFA from the Royal College of Art, London (1998), a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1995) and was awarded honorary Doctorates from the Institute of American Indian Arts (2023) and Claremont Graduate University (2016). Gibson is currently an artist-in-residence at Bard College.
