Curatorial Coordinator

The American Federation of Arts (AFA), the leader in traveling exhibitions internationally, is seeking a full-time Curatorial Coordinator. AFA is a non-profit organization founded in 1909 and is dedicated to enriching the public’s experience and understanding of the visual arts through organizing and touring art exhibitions for presentation in museums around the world, publishing exhibition catalogues featuring important scholarly research, and developing educational programs. The Curatorial Coordinator provides support for the curatorial and exhibitions staff and assists with all administrative aspects of the department, including publications. This is an entry level position that provides an opportunity to learn about the practical aspects of curatorial and exhibition development, and to work with artists, museums, registrars, curators and more from across the country.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrate a commitment to advancing the AFA’s mission to expand access to art and to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Coordinate and provide administrative support for the AFA’s exhibitions and curatorial department, including drafting correspondence, scheduling meetings, creating and tracking timelines, updating calendars, and responding to queries;
  • Assist with editing, distribution, and review of contracts;
  • Field and research questions related to AFA archives;
  • Assist with budget projections, budget reconciliations, and cash flow schedules;
  • Maintain contact with presenting museums to schedule meetings, create and track timelines, and ensure receipt of necessary exhibition documentation;
  • Assist Curators with developing and tracking lists of prospective museums for exhibition tours, organization of exhibition checklists;
  • Work collaboratively to secure rights and reproduction permissions and other materials for promotional materials, exhibition publications, and educational materials;
  • Provide assistance for curatorial, exhibitions committee, and other meetings, including set up and taking minutes;
  • Input, edit, and update various lists and forms in the exhibitions database (checklists, lender lists, etc.);
  • Communicate across organization to ensure that all departments have what is needed for press releases, the AFA Website, funding proposals, etc.;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experiences in a museum or art-related environment preferred;
  • B.A. and a strong interest in the arts, museums, exhibitions, and art history;
  • Strategic thinker and creative problem solver;
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomatic abilities with the talent to connect with a range of
    collaborators;
  • Facility with Microsoft Word Suite, databases, and project management software.

Salary Range: Up to $50,000 commensurate with experience. Comprehensive employer paid benefits package with three weeks paid vacation and ten paid holidays included.
